Digital Smile Design: suitable for everyone?

How is the Simle Design DDS process?

It is a simple process, which by means of a few photographs of the patient’s face, a virtual simulation of the smile is made taking into account the proportions of the patient’s face.

In two visits, a simulation of the smile can be made and thanks to some records of the patient’s mouth, this virtual simulation can be taken in the patient’s mouth, photographs can be taken, and the patient himself evaluates the result. All this without the need to alter the actual anatomy of the patient’s teeth, it is a process that does not require any type of anesthesia and is completely harmless and painless.

What are the advantages of Digital Smile Design?

When a patient requires a rehabilitation of his or her mouth, or a simple smile makeover, the patient can see the final result without undergoing any invasive treatment. It helps us to work with interdisciplinary teams to improve communication and achieve an optimal result.

It is like the architect who makes a project, a study and plans where to place each room, before building, constructing or reforming a house. Nowadays, the DDs is the project or the previous study before rehabilitating a patient’s mouth.

For which pathologies can DDS be useful?

DDs is currently used to improve the patient’s smile and function, regardless of the pathology that has eroded the smile.

It is useful for small smile changes up to advanced cases where the patient’s entire mouth must be rehabilitated, it helps to plan the least invasive options.

The pathologies that cause the greatest esthetic changes are those associated with periodontal pathology, associated with bleeding gums and gum and bone loss. On the other hand, there is the bruxist patient, who clenches the teeth and wears them down to the point of disfiguring the smile line and affecting the masticatory function.

How old does a person have to be before being able to have a Digital Smile Design?

At almost any age we can use the DDs, any modification of the smile can be simulated before touching the patient, there are cases that will be milder and others that will be more severe.

Today the system is used to improve the aesthetics of our prosthesis, it is not associated with an age but to treat a more or less advanced pathology.
