Do you know the aesthetic blepharoplasty?

Aesthetic blepharoplasty is the operation that aims to correct the signs in which the eyelids manifest facial aging: sagging of the skin of the upper eyelids and “bags” in the lower eyelids and in the inner portion of the upper eyelids.

What does the technique consist of?

In most cases, the incisions are placed in the natural lines of the upper eyelids and just below the eyelashes in the lower eyelids; in some cases they may extend to the crow’s feet. Through these incisions the skin is separated from the underlying fat and muscle, removing excess fat and sometimes excess skin and muscle. The incisions are closed with very fine sutures.

In other cases, for example, in young patients in whom there is only excess fat, a transconjunctival blepharoplasty of the lower eyelids can be performed; the incision is placed inside the lower eyelid leaving no visible scar.

Despite this, blepharoplasty does not eliminate “crow’s feet” or other wrinkles or drooping of the eyebrows. It can be performed alone or together with other aesthetic surgeries of the face, such as cervicofacial lifting or frontal lifting.

How is the postoperative period?

The postoperative period is usually quite bearable, but certain things must be taken into account:

  • During the days following the operation, bruising, discomfort or dry eyes may appear.
  • The recovery time may vary in each patient and will depend on whether the patient has undergone an upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty or both. In any case, recovery is usually quite fast and in a few weeks the patient will recover his appearance and can return to work.
  • In the postoperative period, the patient can lead a normal, quiet life, although during the first week no type of sporting activity is recommended. After the second week, physical exercise can be resumed if so indicated by your doctor.
  • During the hours or days following surgery, the patient’s vision may be blurred, although he/she will be able to read and use electronic devices with a screen without any problem.
  • It is advisable not to drive until vision is fully recovered.
  • It is not advisable to sunbathe until the bruises have disappeared and, in case of incision, you should wait at least one month and always use high sun protection (especially if the operation is performed during the summer months).
  • Finally, it will be necessary to attend the scheduled postoperative controls.

After surgery, an ointment will be applied to your eyes to lubricate them, and in some cases, a soft bandage. You may have discomfort on your eyelids; if there is any, it is easily relieved with the medication prescribed by your surgeon (if you have severe or persistent pain, you should inform your surgeon). You should keep your head elevated for a few days after surgery and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising.

The operation lasts approximately one hour. The patient can leave the clinic after a short time and in complete safety, without the need for complete rest.

Is the result definitive?

The result of the operation is very favorable and long lasting and, in general, the eyelid bags do not usually reappear.

The scars may have a pinkish appearance during the first months. They will progressively fade until they become a clear, almost invisible line. The results of blepharoplasty, a more youthful and lively appearance, are maintained for years; in many cases, the results are permanent.
