Ellipse: intragastric balloon without endoscopy to end obesity

This is a non-invasive technique available for the first time in Madrid at the Madrid Obesity Institute. It does not require endoscopy, anesthesia or hospitalization, so the risks disappear.

Elipse is the first device in the world to be small enough to be swallowed by mouth. The balloon is associated to a tube that, once in the stomach, can be filled with up to 500 ml of liquid; this will be automatically removed with an autonomous operation valve once the objective has been fulfilled. The device will be expelled from the body through the intestine.

The Elipse balloon does not work by itself, but produces a feeling of satiety that should reduce the amount of calories ingested. In addition, it will be accompanied by a medication that will prevent discomfort and vomiting in the days following implantation.

On the other hand, in addition to Elipse we have another ingestible balloon: Obalon. In each case the most suitable option is studied.

Preparation before Elipse

The patient who is going to swallow the Elipse device the first day will only be able to eat liquids; from the second day onwards he/she will be able to eat soft foods, and gradually a normal diet will be added.

Scientific evidence for the Ellipse balloon

Studies have been conducted in people with a BMI of 27-40 and have shown improvements in triglyceride and hemoglobin levels, as well as a reduction of eight centimeters in waist circumference.
