Giving joy to the years

Dr. Mª José Villares has been the Medical Director of the Aesthetic Unit that bears her name at the Clínica Corachán in Barcelona for more than 22 years and she talks to us about her way of living medicine and treating her patients.

Dr. Villares, how do you, as a professional in aesthetic medicine, define the effects of the passage of time?

It is difficult to accept the effects of the passage of time on your skin with joy, and to accept them as they come naturally. Before coming in for a consultation, my patients fill out a short questionnaire. The questions are not only about their health, but I ask them to inform me about their eating habits, toxins, medications and, above all, about their emotional state and control. We all go through different stages of life, but each one of us has a different way of responding emotionally to what we experience. Our cellular aging has a lot to do with the way we have or have had to control our emotions.

How do you deal with each case?

At the beginning of any treatment I take a “before” picture. I call this picture the “before” picture. Sometimes it can reflect tiredness, discouragement and bitterness. It is a stage from which we want to wipe the slate clean. The photo of the “after” treatment reflects light, life, illusion and desire to “give joy to the years”. It is the image of the “second chance” which is a positive reinforcement to face the challenges of your new stage with a good face and confidence.

Is there a technique for each case?

It is very important to know how to combine all the techniques that Aesthetic Medicine offers us (less and less invasive): collagen generators and mini-threads for flaccidity, small doses of vitamins and Platelet Rich Plasma, application of botulinum toxin in points that soften hard features, sifting dark circles and application of hyaluronic acid deposits or polylactic acid to highlight the features. We must look at the face as a whole, always avoiding the “wax doll” faces that we sometimes see on the street. As a professional with more than twenty years of experience, I believe that the important thing is to bring out the best in everyone, showing a natural, serene and elegant result, always in accordance with the biological age and personality of each person. That is why I believe that Aesthetic Medicine allows us to “give joy to the years” if it is practiced in a balanced way, with good sense and common sense, like any other profession.
