The fertility of women depends on the actual age of their ovaries

The Marquès Institute and the Echevarne Laboratory have presented a study on ovarian age which concludes that women can know if they will have sterility problems and decide to bring forward their maternity. Female fertility decreases with the passage of time and its most notorious decline is centered between 10 and 15 years before menopause.

From the age of 35 onwards, the number of eggs is reduced to 10% and the fewer eggs that remain, the worse their quality is. Dr. Marisa López-Teijón indicates that women who wish to become mothers should know the real age of their ovaries in order to decide to bring forward motherhood, check their eggs or assume that they will need assisted reproduction treatment.

Knowing the real ovarian age

A woman’s fertility is calculated on the basis of her reproductive age, which is why it is essential to know the ovarian reserve through the concentration of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH). The cells of the ovarian follicles are responsible for the production of this hormone and it does not vary during the menstrual cycle.

They are obtained by a blood test and are compared with the values established as normal for each age. Until now they were compared with indices from women from other continents, but now they are evaluated according to the Spanish population itself.

The Marquès Institute has elaborated reference tables so that women can consult them and know their fertility status according to their age. The highest AMH values are between 15 and 25 years of age and this is when the woman is in a state of high fertility.
