Advanced Bioimpedance (BIA)

What is advanced bioimpedance (BIA)?

The multi-frequency segmental body bioimpedance study is an analysis of the body structure in which all its parameters are analyzed.

It calculates, among others, the percentage of body fat, muscle mass, minerals, proteins, level of visceral fat, degree of obesity, basal metabolism and recommended caloric intake.

What does it consist of?

Bioelectrical impedance is a technique used to measure body composition based on the body’s ability to conduct an electrical current.

Such electrical conductivity is greater in lean tissue than in adipose tissue, since the former contains almost all the body’s water and electrolytes. Consequently, it is on the lean mass that it is possible to measure impedance from water.

The conductivity of components such as blood or urine is high, that of muscle is intermediate and that of bone, fat or air is low.

Why is it performed?

It is a complete and highly accurate measurement technique for the study of body composition. Bioimpedance is used to obtain, among others:

  • Body composition analysis
  • Muscle-fat analysis
  • Obesity diagnosis
  • Analysis of segmental lean mass
  • Extracellular water analysis
  • Body composition history
  • Fitness assessment
  • Visceral fat area
  • Weight control
  • Research parameter
  • Body phase angle
  • Water composition
  • Segmental body water analysis
  • Segmental extracellular water analysis
  • Extracellular water ratio analysis

It is also of great help in establishing nutrition and exercise plans together with the data provided by the stress tests with measurement of oxygen consumption already performed in the sports medicine service. It can also be performed in children obtaining the same data and other useful data in growth.

Preparation for performing BIA

About 1 minute of preparation is needed: while the technician prepares and cleans the device, the subject should remain in light underwear or leggings.

Significance of abnormal results

Adequate percentages of fat, leg and arm musculature and calorimetric calculation of body intake will be established.

BIA Advances

Currently, the Inbody 770 is the latest model in bioimpedance tools, an advanced machine in studies used by experts. It has a 98.4% correlation with DEXA, the gold standard method. It uses a broad spectrum Multi-frequency measurement method DSM-BIA and SMF-BIA.

It has numerous certificates such as NAWI and CE that provide a high level of research approved globally.

This treatment has been written in collaboration with Dr. Enrique Perez de Ayala. The results also have medical applications in other specialties such as Cardiology, Pneumology, Hepatology, Nephrology and Oncology.
