Tips to accompany La Roja at the World Cup in Brazil

After the success of the Spanish National Team in the last World Cup, many fans have decided to accompany them to the World Cup in Brazil (from June 12 to July 13). For this reason, the Spanish Society of Tropical Medicine and International Health (Semtsi) has published some tips to prevent the spread of some diseases. Travelers should be alert to any small symptom, both during the stay and on the return trip.

Vaccination

The quickest way to obtain information is to go to one of the 84 International Vaccination Centers in Spain. Currently, the greatest threat to the Brazilian population is mosquito-borne diseases, mainly dengue fever. The only form of protection is to wear clothes that cover the skin as well as possible, to stay in secure facilities with mosquito nets and air conditioning, and to use repellents above all. Although vaccinations are not compulsory for entering Brazil, the Ministry of Health also recommends to be prevented against measles and rubella, as well as tetanus and diphtheria. It should be noted that vaccination against yellow fever is required to visit certain regions of the country, such as the city of Curitiba (home of the Spain vs. Australia match).

Other advice

It will be very useful to take out health insurance. Only in the large cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador de Bahia is there a high level of health care.

As regards food, you should bear in mind that the main enemy of the traveler is water. It is therefore advisable to always drink bottled water. To minimize risks, also be wary of street food stands and homemade products that do not have a sanitary seal. Fruits and vegetables should always be eaten without skin and well cooked. Finally, the indispensable element is a basic first-aid kit. This should include: medical supplies, mosquito repellents, antipyretics, anti-inflammatories, antidiarrheals, antibiotics and water purification tablets if you are going to rural areas. Also remember to carry your up-to-date vaccination card with you and have a medical examination when you return from Brazil.
