What are the advantages of nasal endoscopic surgery over other treatments?
The advantages of nasosinusal endoscopic surgery over older techniques are basically that it is a much less invasive technique, which therefore produces less bleeding during the operation, a shorter duration of the surgical act itself and the absence of external incisions.
It should also be noted that for the surgeon there is a better visualization of the anatomical structures and that in the immediate postoperative period there is practically no packing in the nose so that the patient leaves the operating room breathing through the nose. It should also be noted that the post-operative recovery time is much shorter and therefore the patient can return to normal activities very soon.
What pathologies can be corrected thanks to this surgery?
Functional endoscopic nasosinusal surgery was developed to treat chronic rhinosinusitis processes with or without polyps inside the nose. This was a great advance with respect to the conventional techniques we had up to that moment. Subsequently, small variations of the basic technique have been incorporated, allowing to treat, for example, turbinate hypertrophy, turbinate growth, by means of radiofrequency.
It is also possible to treat benign tumors, both of the nostrils and paranasal sinuses, and small corrective surgeries can be performed on the nasal septum that do not imply the need for a complete septoplasty.
What aspects should be taken into account before and after this surgery?
The only thing that must be taken into account before performing endoscopic nasosinusal surgery is that the patient must have undergone a preoperative CT examination.
This allows the surgeon to know in advance the anatomy and pathology to be encountered, which greatly increases safety and reduces the possibility of post-operative complications.
Regarding post-operative care, these are minimal. It is simply a medical treatment and a beginning of nasal washes that allow to eliminate the secretions that may have accumulated in the nostrils. This allows the patient to return to normal life very quickly.
