What is robotic surgery and what is its application in gynecology

Robotic gynecological surgery is a minimally invasive robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery and is intended to perform highly complex surgical procedures. During the intervention, the surgeon, located at the robot’s console, controls a camera that has been introduced through an 8 mm tube or trocar through a millimetric incision in the abdomen of the patient to be operated on.

Through the camera and with the help of a screen with a three-dimensional, high-definition, clear and enlarged view, the professional can observe the area to be operated on. Through robotic arms and articulated forceps also introduced through 8 mm trocars, the robot transfers in real time and with absolute fidelity and precision, the movements of the surgeon’s hand located on the robot’s console, to the surgical field.

What are the benefits of robotic surgery?

The use of the robot provides the surgeon with greater safety, allowing access to anatomical areas that are difficult to access, facilitates an enlarged 3-dimensional view of the patient’s interior, ensures stable handling of surgical instruments (forceps, scissors, etc.) without tremors, and allows maximum precision in the surgeon’s hand movements.

Other benefits of robotic surgery are:

  • Greater precision is achieved during the intervention.
  • The incisions are millimetric and, therefore, scars are barely visible.
  • Minimal bleeding.
  • The recovery period is reduced and the postoperative period is less painful.
  • The risk of infections is reduced.
  • Less pain medication is required.

What type of surgery is it designed for?

Robotic surgery is designed for all gynecological laparoscopic surgeries, although it is mainly used as a support for the performance of more complex surgical procedures that require a higher level of safety and precision, for example in the following cases:

  • Treatment of cervical cancer
  • Treatment of ovarian cancer
  • Endometrial cancer treatment
  • Hysterectomy (surgery to remove the uterus)
  • Myomectomy (surgery to remove uterine fibroids)
  • Treatment of deep endometriosis
  • Urinary incontinence

Women’s CD, experts in gynecologic robotic surgery

It should be clarified that robotic surgery is not surgery performed by a robot, but rather minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery directed and carried out by expert surgeons with the precision provided by the robot.

Both types of surgery, conventional laparoscopic and robotic laparoscopic, the latter in which the robot precisely replicates the surgeon’s movements, are safe therapeutic options, but in either case must be performed by highly specialized and experienced medical professionals.

At Womens’ CD we have a team of highly specialized surgeons with the appropriate training, the necessary expertise and a great deal of experience in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery.
