What is the difference between invisible orthodontics and self-ligating braces

In this article, Dr. Manuel Pesqueira, a dentist specializing in Orthodontics, explains the different orthodontic treatments that can be applied if needed: invisible orthodontics and self-ligating brackets. He tells us what each of them consists of, what advantages they have and how effective they are.

What does invisible orthodontics consist of?

Invisible orthodontics consists of the use of transparent splints that are changed weekly and, thanks to their continued use, the teeth are moved until optimum dental alignment is achieved for the patient.

To perform this type of orthodontics, a previous study of the patient’s mouth is required, consisting of a scan and a virtual simulation called Clincheck, which is performed by the orthodontist and shows how the teeth move to their ideal position. Once the simulation is approved with the desired result, the aligners are made and the treatment begins. The patient changes the aligners every 7-10 days under the supervision of the specialist and with the change of each splint the teeth will correct their position.

The duration will depend on the diagnosis

Like any other orthodontic treatment, the duration will depend on the patient’s malocclusion. The treatments we do in the clinic can vary between 6 months and 2 years, in the most complex cases, as long as the patient is willing to collaborate. It should also be noted that, today, the treatment is indicated for everyone, both adults and children.

In addition, invisible orthodontics does not present any contradiction, but it is necessary that, like any orthodontic treatment, the patient maintains his or her oral health correctly and has a healthy mouth.

Self-ligating brackets: no ligatures, faster treatment and increased comfort

Self-ligating brackets do not require the use of any type of ligatures to hold the archwire, they simply consist of a gate that opens and closes. Their main advantage over other types of braces is that, by not using ligatures, their structure provides a lighter but constant force, making the treatment faster and less painful than with traditional braces. In addition, it also reduces the accumulation of plaque and tartar that normally generated the ligature. Another advantage is that the bracket is smaller and, therefore, it is much more esthetic, a fact that provides more comfort to the patient.

The effectiveness of its application is total for correcting any malocclusion, as long as the patient collaborates in the process, attends appointments and follows the guidelines given by the specialist, as in the case of invisible orthodontics.

Important habits for better adaptation to orthodontics

Finally, it is important to note that, in either of the two treatments, the most important thing is to maintain good hygiene and during the first few days use orthodontic wax, in the case of self-ligating braces, to avoid wounds in the mouth. But almost always, adaptation to orthodontics is usually much better than patients imagine.
