Intervention to reduce the breast. Reduction mammoplasty

Breast hypertrophy is a pathology characterized by excessive breast volume that can cause physical discomfort (back pain, shoulder discomfort due to the bra or the appearance of skin lesions in the submammary fold), as well as condition changes in clothing or physical activities. The breast is usually large, inelastic and hard.

To treat it, we have the reduction mammoplasty, a technique that manages to reduce the size of the breast, modify its shape and reposition it in an appropriate position, leaving hidden scars.

Reduction mammoplasty

The reduction mammoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, and lasts between 2 and 4 hours.

There are many techniques, and the Plastic Surgery specialist selects the most appropriate depending on the volume, the height of the breast and nipple, the width and shape of the breast.

The posterior scars can be of three types:

  • A scar around the areola.
  • A periareolar scar and a vertical scar from the anterior to the submammary fold.
  • The two previous scars plus a scar in the submammary fold, in the shape of an inverted T.

Reduction mammoplasty postoperative period

Reduction mammoplasty requires an overnight hospital stay.

During the immediate postoperative period you will need to wear a special bra for about a month. After the operation, the sensitivity of the nipples will be diminished and will gradually recover.

The swelling will decrease over the next 3-6 weeks.

It is not a painful procedure, but for 3 weeks no sudden exercises should be performed.

The scars will follow their normal maturation process. In the first 3-6 months they will redden and gradually lighten over the next 12-18 months, when the maturation process is completed.
