Clarifications on hair loss

Hair loss is a common concern among men and women, much is written and talked about it, so let’s clarify some causes and treatments to clear the most common doubts. Let’s start with two of the first questions we all ask ourselves, if it is a hereditary issue and who is more affected, men or women? Well, common baldness is indeed conditioned by genetics and to be triggered it requires high levels of dihydrotestosterone in the blood, to act on the receptors that in the scalp area start the alopecic process.

Women, in general, do not have high levels of dihydrotestosterone, and therefore, the alopecia process is not activated so easily. Although women may experience some hair loss after childbirth, because there is a hormonal readjustment, in which there is a drop in pregnancy hormones that must be replaced by the usual hormonal balance of the non-pregnant woman.

We already have two causes of hair loss, there is also the widespread belief that cosmetic hair treatments and their products cause us to lose hair. The reality is that hair treatments affect hair in very different ways, depending on the composition of the product. But it should be clarified that the most commonly used dyes do not affect the hair root and, therefore, although some may damage the hair, the nascent hair is not affected and over time, as new hair grows, the structure and appearance of the hair will be normal.

There is also the belief that there is hair loss after the summer. In this regard, we must remember that the sun is an alopecia inducer, and we do not usually take prevention on the scalp. We should also bear in mind that the end of summer coincides with the seasonal replacement of hair.

Even so, hair loss can be avoided with an effective treatment, which will be the one that – in each case – counteracts the reason for the hair loss. Common male alopecia has highly effective treatments, which must be maintained for a very long time, while in female alopecia the cause must be found out, which in many cases can be hormonal and corrected.

Regarding treatment times, when it is an alopecia due to destabilization -such as iron deficiency-, it must be treated until the deficiency is normalized. In the case of androgenic alopecia, there is no limit to the treatment in principle, since androgenic alopecia is constantly evolving.

Likewise, the hair can always be strengthened with nutricosmetics and topical products, such as conditioners.
