Egg and Sperm Donation in Spain

Egg and sperm donation processes are becoming more and more established in Spanish society, and many people decide to undergo these practices allowing the advancement of assisted reproduction techniques in the country. This is why Spain has become a place of reference for patients from all over the world.

The profile of people who come to a sperm bank are, in their majority, men with sperm and with a very low or null sperm count, and single women or women with a female partner. In the case of egg donations, women with poor or no oocyte quality attend. These banks are also often used to avoid hereditary diseases.

It should be noted that egg donation is much more complex than sperm donation, since the process is more costly. At CEFER Reproduction Institute, egg donation requires more than 20 visits to the center because we administer medication to the donor to ensure the correct administration of the same, and any donation involves undergoing a small intervention with deep sedation.

Spain, a country of solidarity and a world reference

Spanish society is generally supportive, a fact that is demonstrated by the great success of the National Transplant Organization (ONT) program, a world reference model. However, we see that over the years it has become more difficult to obtain donors, perhaps related to the fact that the economic compensation is low in relation to the standard of living required in the country. What is true is that we are currently studying more candidates who want to become donors, and if we used to accept 20% of those interested, now we are left with only 13%. Even so, we could relate the economic crisis to the 20% increase in donations that we have perceived with respect to before its hatching.

Spain is undoubtedly a country of reference throughout Europe in assisted reproduction methods, both in terms of the number of cases treated and the quality of care it offers. For example, we were the second in the world in offering a semen washing solution in patients with HIV or hepatitis C to avoid infecting the couple or the child.
