Osteopathy and ophthalmology: an unknown treatment

Osteopathy is still a great unknown in the world of ophthalmology, but nevertheless its application in the prevention and improvement of vision is becoming more and more common. In addition, it offers very good results in the treatment of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, strabismus or glaucoma, among others.

Causes of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism

In the treatment of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, osteopathy improves the defects of light refraction, working each of the bones that form the orbit and its ocular lens assembly. The symptom to detect the deformation of the eyeball is blurred or distorted vision. The main causes that can originate this deformation are usually due to actions during childbirth or pregnancy. It can also be produced by a compression of the cranial bones that develop alterations of muscles, nerves or arteries, causing defects in vision, as well as the focus of the eye.

In the case of astigmatism, due to the irregularity in the curvature, the spherical shape is altered changing to a more elliptical or oval shape impeding the focus between far and near. Astigmatism can be associated in some cases with myopia, hyperopia or for other isolated reasons.

Osteopathy as a treatment

With osteopathy we will work each cranial bone and the ocular vault with the aim of releasing all sutural, muscular, arteriovenous tensions or nerve structures. In this way, we will return to the eye its spherical shape and functionality, as well as a correct position in terms of the eye axis. It is important to start treating the child from an early age, preferably before the age of seven to avoid complications.

For other eye problems such as early cataracts or presbyopia, osteopathy can help the vascularization of the eye, improving the deterioration of the cornea. In the case of glaucoma, also called intraocular tension, osteopathy works as a drainage favoring the movement of blood and considerably decreasing the internal pressure of the eye.

Cranial osteopathy can release tensions around the eyes, acting on the bones of the orbits and intracranial membranes and improving vision in a quite efficient way. In addition, it acts on the circulation of blood, lymph, cerebrospinal fluid and releases pressure from the nerves and blood vessels surrounding the eyes. The qualified osteopath will assess the cranial sutures and vasculonervous bundles through different tests. We will work areas of dysfunction through articular, visceral, membranous or posturological techniques, without forgetting the connections with the rest of the body. All this complemented with exercises and specialized therapies.
