Nipple reconstruction

What is nipple reconstruction?

Nipple reconstruction is a procedure performed to complete the breast reconstructive surgery of a woman who has undergone a mastectomy.

Why is it performed?

Nipple reconstruction serves to give the operated breast a natural appearance again. This procedure is important not only for the aesthetic results, but also for the psychological recovery of the woman who has had to overcome breast cancer.

What does it consist of?

The nipple reconstruction surgery also includes the reconstruction of the areola, lasts 45 to 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. There are several techniques that are used depending on the individual patient’s problems.

Nipple reconstruction:

  1. Removal of the contralateral if the nipple is large and well projected.
  2. Prosthesis for patients who do not wish to undergo another surgery
  3. The use of a star-shaped rim whose sutured tips allow a good projection.

Reconstruction of the areola:

  1. Removal of the contralateral if the areola is large.
  2. Skin graft taken from an area with a slightly darker color (usually the inguinal area)
  3. Intradermal tattooing (non-surgical alternative) performed as an outpatient procedure.

Postoperative

After surgery, to avoid infection, medication is applied to the incision. Stitches can be removed after 7 to 10 days and full recovery is expected after 15 to 20 days.
