What is Orthotropics?

Orthotropics is a facial orthodontic technique that, through invisible appliances in both jaws, expands the maxillary bone and jaw. The most important difference with other orthodontic methods is that it increases the size of the patient’s airway, providing more air entry into the upper airway. This method encompasses the care of several points of the body beyond the health of gums and teeth.

It is a technique that accompanies the natural growth of the child and corrects jaw imbalances in adults, therefore, less invasive than other conventional procedures and usually lasts, in general terms, about 48 months in children and 36 in adults.

Why is it done?

Orthotropics is used when the natural development of the mouth is sought, first guiding the growth of both jaws, they expand and as a result the teeth align themselves; and in a second phase we use treatments with aligners to close possible gaps. This procedure rules out the possibility of surgery or extractions, since the objective of orthotropics is to facilitate mandibular advancement to open the airway.

In the long term, the treatment is able to prevent different health problems, since in addition to oral wellbeing, it also acts to improve breathing and posture.

What does it consist of?

Unlike other treatments, such as orthodontics, orthotropics does not require specific care, since it acts directly on the causes of dental crowding and other dental problems. However, to ensure the success of the treatment will require the patient’s participation through commitment to the correct use of the invisible appliances in both jaws.

One of the greatest advantages of orthotropics is the ability to correct prognathism or retrognathism in a natural way, without extractions and without surgery. It is known as the orthodontics of beautiful faces because it enhances the beauty of the patient.

Advantages of orthotropics

Some of the advantages of this technique are:

  • The maxillary bone and jaw growth is expressed to the maximum, generating more space for the teeth.
  • The teeth are aligned without the need for extractions.
  • It improves the airway, respiratory obstructions and infant apnea.

Preparation for orthotropics treatment

A previous study is required to analyze the viability of the patient and to elaborate a diagnosis. To ensure the success of the treatment, the patient’s commitment is fundamental, being higher than in conventional orthodontics.

Care after the intervention

On the day the appliances are placed in the mouth, no special care is necessary. You should follow the instructions of the Orthotropics specialist Doctor who will recommend how to use it.
