Nipple reduction

What is nipple reduction?

Nipple reduction is a plastic and cosmetic surgery performed to correct and shape the nipples and areola. In fact, the nipples can be long, drooping downwards or have a very large diameter, while the areola can have important dimensions and not reflect the aesthetic harmony desired by the patient.

Why is it performed?

This procedure can be requested by both men (for example, to correct gynecomastia) and women, and can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with other surgeries to modify the size of the breast.

What does it consist of?

Nipple reduction surgery is a very simple procedure, its duration can vary from 30 to 45 minutes and can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Experts, given the sensitivity of the area and the problems that could arise during breastfeeding, advise the operation only in the presence of specific conditions. Specifically, the reduction of the areola consists of removing a layer of skin with more pigmentation and sewing with an almost invisible thread to avoid leaving visible scars.

Preparation for nipple reduction

Since it is an aesthetic change, before the intervention the Plastic Surgery specialist must evaluate with the patient the new dimensions to be given to the nipple in order to obtain the most satisfactory result possible.

Postoperative recovery

As it is an outpatient procedure, the patient can go home the same day of the operation and resume daily activities after 24 hours. It is recommended to avoid physical effort, sudden movements with the arms and exposure to the sun. After a couple of weeks, sports activities can be resumed.
