Septic pathology is the field that encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of infectious complications of the locomotor system. There are different types within the pathology. The most frequent are infections of the joint prosthesis, hip, knee and shoulder. They are the ones that appear more frequently both early after the prosthesis placement surgery (acute infections), as well as those that appear later (chronic infections).
Causes of septic pathologies
Explained in a very simplified way, if at the time of surgery, a bacterium is deposited on the surface of the prosthesis and manages to develop, it will end up colonizing the prosthesis and causing its rejection. Broadly speaking, this is the main cause of septic rejection of the prosthesis.
There are also risk factors that can favor its appearance. Some of these are diseases such as diabetes, leukemia and, among other causes, steroid intake.
Symptoms and treatment of septic pathologies
In acute cases, the symptoms are pain, inflammation and even fever. On the other hand, there are chronic cases, whose only sign is pain, which is why it is often difficult to diagnose.
The treatment of septic pathologies is based on the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team. In all cases, surgical treatment associated with a correct and prolonged antibiotic treatment is required. This treatment has a very positive result, and more than 90% of the cases are cured.
