What are testicular prostheses?

Testicular prostheses are ovoid structures that simulate the shape of a normal testicle. Currently, they exist in different sizes in order to achieve the greatest similarity with the patient’s other testicle.

These prostheses are made of silicone.

Why are they performed?

It is performed when a patient lacks a testicle due to testicular removal. This loss can be due to multiple reasons such as testicular cancer, a congenital defect or an accident.

It is used mainly for aesthetic purposes to reduce the psychological impact that the mutilation may have on the patient.

What does it consist of?

The surgery does not require many complications. First of all, a general anesthesia will be applied. Once it has taken effect, a small incision will be made in the groin. Through the inguinal canal is where the specialist will be able to place the prosthesis in the empty scrotal pouch.

The procedure usually lasts between 30 minutes and an hour.

Possible complications

  • Displacement of the prosthesis
  • Expulsion or rejection of the prosthesis.
  • Infection or intolerance
  • Hemorrhages, neuralgia, fistulas.

Preparation for placement of testicular prostheses

The patient should be admitted the same day of the operation.

Previously, the patient must be warned by the specialists of the anesthetic risks and the risks of the intervention. After reviewing the patient’s medical history, characteristics and allergies, the operation will begin.

Care after the operation

The patient, if everything goes without extraordinary complications, will be discharged the same day of the operation. The patient will be required to limit his mobility for at least 48 hours.
