Do you know if you suffer from herpetic gingivostomatitis

Dr. Menéndez, specialist in Dentistry and Stomatology, comments on a real case of herpetic gingivostomatitis, defined as a common viral infection that affects the gingival tissue, especially in the mouth, lips and gums. This type of infection is transmitted by physical contact and usually appears in childhood, although sometimes it can also affect adults.

Real case

These images belong to a patient between 50 and 60 years of age, who comes to the clinic because of discomfort in the palate when eating and especially when drinking hot liquids. The naked eye shows a yellowish ulceration with red circinate borders, with small lumps.

What is the diagnosis?

This is a classic herpetic gingivostomatitis, a disease of viral origin that often manifests itself on the palate or gums, sometimes in immunocompromised persons, although this is not the case since the patient is in good health.

Is there a treatment?

There is no specific treatment for this problem. We can only treat it palliatively. Mouthwashes containing zinc chloride and avoiding alcohol, spicy foods, salt and carbonated beverages are indicated. For more information, consult a specialist in dentistry and stomatology.
