First complete kidney transplantation by vaginal route in the world

Dr. Antonio Alcaraz, Urology specialist at barnaclinic+ and member of Top Doctors, has performed for the first time in the world a complete kidney transplant vaginally. The operation was performed simultaneously in a hospital in Bordeaux.

The technique is minimally invasive, the kidney is removed from the living donor through the vagina and inserted into the patient in the same way. This technique represents a breakthrough in laparoscopy and NOTES (natural orifice) surgery. “It has been a real success” acknowledged Dr. Alcaraz, he and his team are pioneers and international referents in this type of intervention. “Neither exists nor can I think of a less invasive technique. We are defying the laws of physics,” added the urologist.

The kidney transplant is performed with the help of the latest generation Da Vinci Xi robot. Thanks to this technique, the patient avoids a cut of up to 6 centimeters at the level of the navel and the incision in the belly or cesarean section.

In 2016 it is estimated that another 8 to 10 women may be operated with this technique.
