Dr. Marqués introduces regenerative medicine in lumbar discopathy: mesenchymal stem cells

Degeneration of the intervertebral disc is one of the most common causes of chronic low back pain, since this disc is the one that acts as a shock absorber between the vertebrae and allows flexibility of the spine.

Regenerative Medicine is the key to solve degenerative problems, such as the degradation of the intervertebral disc, since the discs cannot regenerate by themselves. Intervertebral disc degradation is one of the most important causes of limiting pain.

The research puts the focus on therapy based on techniques using mesenchymal stem cells. This type of cell is obtained from adipose tissue, mainly from the abdominal wall, a common area of fat deposition and quick access.

Regenerative medicine is key to treat pathologies such as intervertebral disc degradation.

Mesenchymal stem cells have an anti-inflammatory capacity with great potential to repair the affected tissue and help in the recovery of bone degenerative disc disease, i.e., pain is eliminated.

Dr. Alberto Marqués’ team already has the pioneering Lipocell® system, a new generation technology that maximizes the regenerative action of adipose tissue with minimal tissue manipulation when extracting adult stem cells.

The surgical procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, that is, without hospitalization. Once the liposuction and subsequent processing have been performed, the product obtained is implanted in the area to be treated.

The postoperative period can be perfectly compatible with the incorporation to daily life, although it is advisable that the patient keeps a relative rest after surgery for a week. Subsequently, physiotherapy and rehabilitation protocols directed by the medical team are established.
