The doctor as an entrepreneur, reflection of the health professionals in the II Forum Quirúrgica

Something is changing in the healthcare sector. The cutbacks, the crisis, the increase in healthcare costs (new technologies), the higher age expectancy, the growing number of chronic patients… are just some of the factors that are changing the sector. Medical professionals also know this and reflect on it in spaces such as the II Forum Quirúrgica, which brought together important speakers from the sector at ESADE Barcelona under the title El médico como empresario (The doctor as an entrepreneur). This morning the II Forum Quiúrgica was held at ESADE Barcelona, where the current scenario of private medicine was outlined and the keys were given to medical professionals who are thinking of forming their own companies, their own professional societies. The evolution of the sector and the economic context make it increasingly feasible for medical professionals to become entrepreneurs, but are doctors prepared to become entrepreneurs? what should they take into account? what difficulties will they face? is this what the sector really demands? what role do insurers play? and hospital networks? how does the legal issue work? how does it work? What mistakes are usually made? What does the management of these companies entail? These are just some of the questions that have been answered this morning at the aforementioned forum, answers to which we will be giving more details in future posts in this blog, where we will go into some of the presentations to give the reader a picture of the current scenario of private healthcare and what “the doctor as an entrepreneur” is facing.

To provide these answers, the Forum Quirúrgica, a member of Top Doctors, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary, was attended by speakers of the highest level: the Vice-Dean of ESADE, Prof. Dr. Manuel Peiró; the CEO of Quirón Hospitales, Dra. María Cordón; the Deputy Director of SEGURCAIXA-Adeslas, Albert Sarrà; the Territorial Medical Director of Sanitas, Dr. Jordi Morell; the Deputy Corporate Director of the Barcelona Medical Association, Dr. Marc Soler; the President of Management For Doctors (M4D), Dr. Ignacio Pradera; and the Executive President of Abante Asesores, Mr. Santiago Satrústegui.

The Forum was attended by top-level medical and healthcare management professionals, and thus became a space for reflection on the current situation of the sector and the future of medical professionals. Even so, many questions were left open for future forums.
