5 tests that every athlete or amateur should undergo

Practicing sports is important for good health, but it is just as important to do it well, and to be well prepared.

Before starting a sports routine, we must go to a specialist in Sports Medicine to have a sports medical examination to conclude our capacity to be able to undergo such practice.

This medical evaluation will begin with an anamnesis, that is to say, a personal interview through which the medical professional can get to know the patient a little and prepare a report that gathers the most significant data that will form part of the patient’s medical history. Among the information collected we find: name, age, race, reason for consultation, possible diseases, family history, physical examination, etc.

Once the patient’s clinical history has been completed, it will include the anamnesis, the physical and complementary examination, the presumptive diagnoses, the physician’s own value judgments and the treatment to be established after having all the information. All this can be summarized in: subjective data provided by the patient, objective data obtained from the examinations, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.

Among the necessary tests involved in the set of examinations we find:

  • Stress test: usually performed on the treadmill or exercise bike. In them, the patient is subjected to progressive increases in the workload. It usually lasts about 10-15 minutes. The purpose of the test, explains Dr. Mazzanti, is to diagnose or assess the prognosis of coronary artery disease.
  • Spirometry; allows to know the relationship between the cardiovascular, respiratory and blood apparatus. To perform it, it requires apparatus that simulates the effort made in a cycling or athletics race.
  • Electrocardiogram, used to evaluate cardiac rhythm and function by recording the electrical activity of the heart.
  • Exploration of the locomotor system
  • Blood and urine analysis
