Shoulder Injuries: Why Treat Them

Normally, shoulder pain increases with use of the limb, especially when the arm is pulled back, but it is also sustained at rest and is often a pain that disturbs sleep.

These injuries can occur at any age. However, younger patients usually present with tendonitis, while older patients often present with complete tendon ruptures, with or without joint degeneration.

The main cause of shoulder pain is tendon pathology or tendonitis. The shoulder is a very complex joint that requires perfect tendon synchronization for perfect function. Initially, the tendons become inflamed and produce pain.

β€œIn principle, the best treatment for the shoulder is rehabilitation.”

If this is not corrected, the tendons may rupture and, in their most advanced stage, lead to complete degeneration of the joint.

Treatment of shoulder pain and pathology

In principle, the best treatment is rehabilitation. However, in some patients this rehabilitative treatment fails and it is then when surgery is indicated. In most cases it is performed with minimally invasive techniques, such as shoulder arthroscopy. In more advanced cases with joint degeneration, especially in older people, the surgical indication is shoulder prosthesis.

With the use of the new inverted prostheses, a restitution of movement has been achieved, as well as total pain relief.

Failure to carry out the correct treatment in time can mean the progression of the pathology and, therefore, disability.
