When is an endodontic treatment necessary?

A root canal treatment or also known as endodontics is necessary if you are suffering from inflammation and infection in the nerve of your tooth. This treatment, commonly referred to as ‘nerve killing’ is the last option taken before extracting a tooth and making a dental implant for a patient.

It is possible to keep your natural tooth healthy for many years if you opt for a root canal procedure. It is more cost effective for the patient than having to extract a tooth and receive a dental implant and crown. Root canal treatment saves a tooth and the pain subsides within the first few days. In addition, rotary endodontics is often a faster way to perform a root canal using a specific electric handpiece.

What is a root canal?

Root canal treatment is a procedure to relieve dental pain and save your teeth.

During root canal treatment, an endodontist will carefully remove the pulp from inside the tooth, clean, disinfect and then seal with a filling to prevent further damage to the tooth. A crown will likely be placed over the tooth to strengthen it.

What are the signs of the need for endodontic treatment?

Signs to look for include:

  • Pain
  • Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Sensitivity to touch and chewing
  • Tooth discoloration and swelling
  • Oozing and tenderness in the lymph nodes, as well as nearby bone and gum tissues.

Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms.
