As a consultant, the whole spectrum of cutaneous, capillary, mucosal and nail diseases. Frequently, in problematic cases, as a second opinion. Oncologic pathology is preferential: in cutaneous cancer I treated 878 cases in 2013.
What are the main advances in dermatology?
Unlike in the past, in just a few months there are new diagnostic and treatment modalities in inflammatory pathologies, acne, psoriasis, alopecia, nail disorders, etc., as well as in tumor pathologies. In dermo-cosmetic dermatology, excellence in non-surgical anti-aging treatments is being developed.
Genetic studies also stand out, which, with a blood draw, allow us to assess, at the intracellular and molecular level, the patient’s cutaneous deficiencies and the length of their chromosomal telomeres, which we correct with a targeted diet.
What are immediate cutaneous diagnostics (ICD)?
In a few minutes we can make a histopathological diagnosis and immediately undertake the appropriate medical or surgical treatment. It has its limitations, and in such cases we must follow routine protocols.
Are there any new treatments for skin cancers?
Photodynamic treatment is ideal for lesions in the early stages of skin cancer. Today it can be performed without pain, a problem we still had a few months ago. We also have new immunomodulatory treatments for both superficial and metastatic tumors.
What does controlled micrographic surgery consist of?
It continues to be the star treatment for malignant skin tumors. It is a surgical technique and immediate histological examination indicated in high-risk recurrent tumors, especially those of facial location. It allows us to remove the pathological tissue while respecting the healthy tissue, achieving an almost total cure, with a good aesthetic result. We perform an average of 160 interventions per year.
What role does the Instituto Dermatológico Pablo Umbert play at the forefront of cosmetic surgery and medicine?
Our institute is nourished by the advances in continuous information from our university school, residents and collaborators, who provide us with daily clinical and bibliographic sessions. Dermocosmetic procedures are performed in our beauty derm annex unit: dermocosmetic study, laser unit, anti-aging rejuvenation with the patient’s own stem cells and individualized formulations with more effective active ingredients than in commercial dermo-aesthetics, in addition to other treatments of recognized effectiveness. Surgical treatments and hair micro-grafts are performed by specialists in these areas.
