Integrative Medicine and Speech Therapy

Dr. Biurron explains how speech therapy and integrative medicine are combined to solve the patient’s disorders in a more complete way.

Speech therapy focuses on disorders of the voice, speech, language, hearing (hearing and understanding) and orofacial functions, both in children and adults.

It deals, therefore, with Human Communication, which is a fundamental aspect for people, as relational beings that we are. Any problem in this area involves, apart from the logical operational problems for everyday life, a whole series of physical, psychological and emotional consequences, which can sometimes be more limiting than the initial disorder itself. The approach to this whole set of phenomena transcends the area of action of speech therapy as it enters the clinical field, and even within this it is difficult to provide homogeneous resources, since it may be necessary the intervention of different health professionals dispersed among themselves in the methodological, philosophical and operational, with the consequent loss of argumentative coherence.

In the very DNA of Integrative Medicine (IM), as a synergistic discipline that links knowledge backed by scientific rigor from Conventional and Natural Medicine, is to consider as an indivisible whole the physical, psychological and emotional constituent aspects of the person, both in health and disease, always paying proactive attention to preventive aspects. Therefore, IM can effectively and efficiently embrace all the aforementioned set of aspects related to speech therapy processes.

In our case, IM is articulated around knowledge from Conventional Medicine, Speech Therapy and Natural Medicine, the latter in its aspects of: Acupuncture (Auriculo-Acupuncture is preferential in children)/ Traditional Chinese Medicine, Phytotherapy (plants), Homeopathy and Medical Nutrition- as well as Neurosensory Stimulation techniques (Psycho-phono-audiology): Tomatís Techniques.

The fact that IM is in medical hands is also a guarantee of efficacy and safety, since it avoids the potentially serious dangers derived from the professional intrusion of supposedly non-medical naturopaths who are unaware, due to the obvious lack of regulated training, of the medical details of the pathologies they can treat (which are studied in depth during their medical studies), as well as of the logopedic details (except if one is a speech therapist) and the behavior of conventional medical treatments and their interactions with logopedic treatments, the MIR specialization and in its inherent continuing education), as well as they are also unaware of the logopedic details (except if they are speech therapists) and the behavior of conventional medical treatments and their interactions with natural remedies, which can sometimes be very intense.

Thus, as speech therapists and pioneers in MI, we bring our experience in the Integrative Treatment of: speech and language development problems, psychomotor retardation, school maladjustment, hyperactivity, attention disorders, intelligibility problems (with or without hypoacusis), listening disorders, dysphonia, child behavior disorders, child sleep disorders (sleepwalking, night terrors, insomnia…), dental malposition problems, orofacial muscle disorders, atypical swallowing, enuresis…
