5D ultrasound, what improvements does it bring?

First there was the 2D ultrasound, then came the 3D and 4D, and now we have the 5D ultrasound.

The 5D ultrasound makes it possible to distinguish the baby’s features perfectly; you can see if he or she laughs, gesticulates or makes small movements.

The test can be done at any time, but it is recommended between the 24th and 30th week, with the 26th week being the best option. Depending on the time chosen, you will see more or less:

  • Between weeks 12 and 20: you can see the baby’s body but not its features.
  • Between 24 and 32 weeks: you can see the baby’s well-defined features, even if it is grimacing, sucking its thumb or sticking out its tongue.
  • From 32 weeks onward: the baby’s position is visible, but a lower proportion of amniotic fluid may make it difficult to see the baby’s face and gestures clearly.

The main difference between 4D ultrasound and 5D ultrasound is the treatment of the images, which are shown more clearly and with more textures. While 4D is known as the emotional ultrasound, 5D is called “the way of life”.
