Why do Millennials lose their hair?

We call Millennials those born between the early 1980s and early 2000s. There has been a lot of talk lately about the premature aging of this population group; in their 20s and 30s they are already facing situations that should appear later in life, such as hair loss.

Reasons why Millennials are losing hair

  • Nutrition

Poor nutrition can become a major factor in hair loss. In this regard, Millennials are more likely to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle than other generations, and meat is a great source of protein and iron (which help keep hair healthy). It is very important to maintain a balanced diet.

  • Stress

Millennials can suffer from stress for different reasons: emotions, college, work environment, relationship problems, etc. Keep in mind that modern lifestyles are increasingly stressful and this can take its toll on the body.

Stress can push the hair follicles into the resting phase, causing the hair growth phase to stop. This will cause the hairs to remain dormant for about three months and then begin to lose their appearance.

Different studies have highlighted the link between lifestyle-related stress and the onset of premature male pattern hair loss.

  • Mental Health

The American Psychological Association concluded in a study that Millennials are 52% more likely to have sleepless nights caused by stress than any other generation. They are also more likely to experience anger and irritability due to stress. Furthermore, according to other studies, this group has the second worst mental well-being in the world.

In most cases, hair loss problems caused by mental health can be treated, as the underlying problem is usually stress.

There are also genetic factors that can cause hair loss. This is the case with age.

  • Hairstyles

Alopecia traction is a type of hair loss caused by tension placed on the hair follicles. It is most often caused by tight hairstyles and the constant tension of wearing hair in the same style. Hairstyles such as tight braids, high ponytails and men’s bandanas put the hair under tension and can cause hair loss.

We have seen many color trends this year, from red to rose gold, and chemical trauma caused by over-bleaching hair can cause hair breakage.

Both traction alopecia and chemical trauma can be treated if stopped early enough.
