Cholecystectomy: gallbladder surgery

What is gallbladder surgery?

Gallbladder surgery or cholecystectomy consists of the removal of the gallbladder through minimally invasive surgery by making 3 or 4 small incisions in the abdomen of 5 mm and 10 mm.

What does the procedure consist of?

We work with a television screen, insufflating air inside the abdomen and by means of laparoscopic instruments the gallbladder is removed through the umbilicus.

The main reason why the surgery is performed is because there are stones or mud (cholelithiasis) in the gallbladder that cause abdominal discomfort, especially after meals.

On the same day of the intervention, oral tolerance can be started and only one day of hospitalization is enough. In the days following the operation, a fat-free diet is recommended until the body gets used to not having a gallbladder.

Who are the patients to be treated?

All patients diagnosed with cholelithiasis require an evaluation by the surgeon to assess the need for cholecystectomy or not.

Is there any risk for the patient?

The most frequent complications of cholelithiasis are: inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis), obstruction or infection (cholangitis) of the bile duct and/or inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
