The five key questions about facial fillers

What are facial fillers?

Facial fillers are substances designed to be injected into the face, with different compositions and viscosities, which are intended to correct wrinkles, furrows or volume loss.

What can be improved or corrected?

In general, they are aimed at correcting the effects of the passage of time on facial appearance. Specifically, they can smooth wrinkles, fill furrows and facial depressions and produce a tightening and holding effect of the skin plane.

What types of fillers are there?

There are two main groups of materials: resorbable facial fillers, which disappear with time, and permanent facial fillers, which are not eliminated by the body itself. Within the resorbable materials, which are the most frequently used, the most common are hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxyapatite. Depending on the problem to be solved and its location on the face, there is an ideal product, depending on its viscosity and elasticity and the recommended injection plane.

How long do they last and how often should the treatment be repeated?

The duration is variable according to the physico-chemical qualities of the implant. The resorbable materials, which are the most used in Spain, range between 6 and 18 months. There is also a personal variability that depends on the patient’s characteristics and life habits.

Can anyone have this treatment?

There are few contraindications for this type of treatment, but a detailed medical history should always be taken prior to the procedure to rule out any circumstance that would discourage the use of these materials.
