Ozone Therapy in Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic rheumatic disease that, according to the Spanish Society of Rheumatology, affects just over 2% of the population over 20 years of age, mostly women. Sufferers often complain that everything hurts, since it involves constant pain in muscles, ligaments and tendons, persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression as the main symptoms.

Some misconceptions related to the pathology are those that propagate that Fibromyalgia is a completely unknown disease. However, this is erroneous information since in the last 10 years considerable progress has been made in the treatment of this disease, and depending on the case of each patient, improvements can be made that exponentially increase their quality of life, never accept the “get used to the pain”.

Treatment

The treatment of fibromyalgia should be multidisciplinary and include different physical and pharmacological therapies, recommended according to the symptoms presented by each patient. The application of ozone therapy together with other specific treatments can significantly improve the patient’s quality of life. Ozone therapy helps to reduce pain and muscle contracture through the application of ozone by various routes (general and local).

At the IV International Congress of the SEOT, held in Valencia on the 13th, 14th and 15th of last June, I presented a paper on Ozone Therapy applied to Fibromyalgia in which it was found that patients treated with Ozone Therapy and controlled for at least five years, had had a much more favorable evolution compared to the group of patients who had not been applied. The study caused an impact in the scientific community due to the number of patients treated, a sample of more than 3,000 in the last 20 years, which is why this technique is considered an important aid in the management of these patients.
