Treatment of Anxiety in Adults

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is just another emotion, everyone has anxiety. The bad thing is when that anxiety is triggered and the anxiety disorder arrives. And what happens is that it is very uncomfortable, because our heart races, because we sweat, we are accelerated, we are nervous, we are restless and to be like that for a long time is very uncomfortable, it can even limit us in our daily activities. That would be an anxiety disorder, which is a triggered anxiety.

What does cognitive-behavioral therapy and EMDR consist of?

We focus the therapy in three parts:

  1. The first part would be to stabilize the person, to stabilize the symptoms of anxiety and to understand the dynamics of anxiety, why it is triggered, what makes the person feel triggered in certain situations. And when that person manages to understand why they are triggered, what are the ideas that come to them, what are the sensations they have and how does that work, what is the effect of that and that dynamic, we have achieved 50%, which is that the person understands what is happening to them. It is not “I am out of control and I am going crazy”, but that there is an explanation, that would be the first part.
  2. Once we have managed to get the person to stabilize and understand what anxiety is, we would go on to generate skills (if they need them), resources, we would go on to understand what their coping style is, to understand how they process different situations and to restructure that part. A restructuring means that sometimes we have exaggerated ideas that make us see reality in a way that may not be objective.
  3. And the third part would be to go to the root of why that person has an anxious style, has a style that generates anxiety. How do we do it? Well, we do it with EMDR, we work at the level of emotions, sensations and ideas. And the last part, would be to finish the treatment and that the person goes out the door without therapy and without medication if necessary, and can make a normal and happy life.

Can anxiety be cured?

Yes, anxiety can be cured and, moreover, we do not need very long therapies. What we are going to achieve is that the person develops a new coping style, develops new skills that maybe he/she did not have. But above all, we are going to achieve emotional healing.
