10 tips for overweight patients

What are the differences between overweight and obesity?

First of all, we must clarify that we are talking about two totally different conditions.

Overweight is when a person’s body weight is 10% or 20% above their normal weight, that is, the recommended weight for their age, height and sex. All those who have a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 29.9 kg/m2 are overweight and are at risk of developing obesity.

Obesity is a chronic disease. It consists of the excessive accumulation of adipose tissue, i.e. fat found in the body in a generalized form. There are three types of obesity and the BMI is used to identify them:

  • Type I obesity: BMI: 30 – 34.9 kg/m2.
  • Obesity type II: BMI: 35 – 39.9 kg/m2
  • Obesity type III: BMI > 40 kg/m2

So, overweight and obesity are not the same thing. Overweight can lead to obesity. Both are conditions that are related to genetic susceptibility, psychological, social and metabolic disorders.

In addition, it is important to keep in mind that these conditions increase the risk of developing other types of diseases such as:

  • Arterial hypertension
  • Diabetes mellitus type 2
  • Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases
  • Breast, endometrial, colon and prostate neoplasms, among others.
