Facial paralysis occurs as a result of damage to the facial nerve, the nerve that gives mobility to the face. This nerve, in addition to this important function, is responsible for producing lacrimation, salivation, as well as providing the taste of food on the tongue. When a patient presents a facial paralysis, in addition to establishing an early treatment, a battery of tests should be performed in order to have a more accurate diagnosis as well as to know the prognosis of the problem.
Why does facial paralysis occur?
Most facial paralysis is known as Bell’s P. Facial Palsy and resolves with medical treatment. However, there are certain cases in which the facial paralysis is due to another problem and the prognosis is different. In more complex cases or those that have had a worse evolution with the appearance of sequelae, a more specialized microsurgical treatment will be required, which will be performed by a multidisciplinary team trained in these specialized techniques.
