Melanosis and hyperpigmentations: how to treat them?

Melanosis and hyperpigmentations are uneven brown spots that appear on exposed areas such as the face, décolleté and hands after sun exposure.

They appear more frequently in darker skins and are often associated with:

  • the use of contraceptives
  • pregnancy
  • exposure to certain cosmetics

Other types of pigmentation can appear as a result of previous injuries such as:

  • scars
  • severe acne
  • lesions affecting deeper layers of the skin.

Treatment of melanosis and hyperpigmentations

The treatment consists of the administration of depigmenting products such as hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid and alpha hydroxy acids, either alone or together, depending on the lesion and skin type.

As with acne, we can do a first phase of pre-peeling at home followed by a peeling in the office and a post-peeling at home with the same products in lower concentrations. Laser and pulsed light can also be used.

Sun protection is especially important during the treatment and permanently to avoid the appearance of new lesions, since after these treatments, especially laser, there is a significant inflammation that in contact with sunlight can lead to the appearance of spots again.
