Ozone Therapy in Rheumatic Fibromyalgia

What is Rheumatic Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is pain in the muscles and fibrous tissue, ligaments and tendons. It is widespread pain and resembles pain originating in the joints, but it is not a joint disease. There are other symptoms such as fatigue, morning numbness or sleep disturbances, among others.

In Spain, about 800,000 people suffer from rheumatic fibromyalgia, of which between 80 and 90% are women between 30 and 50 years of age.

It is a disease poorly known and sometimes underestimated both by doctors and by the relatives of the person who suffers from it.

What does the treatment with Ozone Therapy consist of?

Intramuscular and/or subcutaneous ozone therapy and systemic ozone administration serve as treatment for this group of patients. The subcutaneous and/or intramuscular administration of small amounts of ozone/oxygen in the painful areas serves as an antalgic (pain reliever) and anti-inflammatory.

In addition, many patients undergo autohemotherapy to improve their general condition and to reduce the sensation of fatigue that they usually report.

The treatment should be multidisciplinary, requiring a rheumatologist, a psychologist and/or psychiatrist, among others.

What effects does ozone therapy achieve in rheumatic fibromyalgia?

Ozone therapy has an anti-inflammatory effect at a general level and also, by increasing the supply of oxygen to all organs and tissues of the body, manages to clearly reduce the feeling of tiredness or fatigue that most patients have.
