Neuroregeneration: Where are we? What can we expect?”

From the Institut Guttmann, Top Doctors center of excellence, and BIOCAT, was held the “B-DEBATE – International Center for Scientific Debate BARCELONA”, in the framework of the CosmoCaixa. A group of 16 of the most important researchers in neuroregeneration worldwide met in Barcelona, along with about 50 clinicians and national researchers, with a daring format. The aim was to foster the exchange of knowledge between cutting-edge researchers, internationally, around the question, “Is neuroregeneration the common frontier of bioengineering, neuroscience, robotics and neurorehabilitation?”

Neuroregeneration to repair brain lesions.

In the future, the lines of research discussed in the debate will make it possible to repair, partially or totally, a brain or spinal cord lesion, for example, by inducing neuroregeneration phenomena. These phenomena have already been seen at a basic level with experimental animals, with interesting results, and are beginning to be demonstrated in different clinical trials in humans. Transferring these experimental findings to people is one of the most important challenges they are seeking to meet in the coming years. The neurorehabilitation hospitals will be in charge of including these new therapies in the usual clinical treatments of patients with neurological damage, and then being able to assess whether they are effective, analyzing the results of all these therapies. In recent years, new paradigms of rehabilitation are gaining ground among neurorehabilitation professionals and researchers, opening new avenues of hope for the cure of neurological diseases.
