Myofunctional Therapy

What is myofunctional therapy (MFT)?

Myofunctional therapy (MTF) is a method applied for the prevention and rehabilitation of dysfunctions or imbalances of the orofacial muscles (those involved in speech). Among the different alterations that can cause these imbalances, the most common are: facial and craniofacial malformations, imbalances in the structure of the teeth or jaw, degenerative diseases, trauma or stroke.

Why is it performed?

Myofunctional therapy is performed with the aim of achieving a correct coordination of the orofacial musculature. Its basis of work is the buccomaxillofacial system, which is in charge of vital functions such as breathing, swallowing, chewing and speech; and of multiple others, such as yawning, crying, vomiting, etc.

What does it consist of?

Myofunctional therapy is based on analysis, diagnosis and personalized treatment, which includes exercises aimed at the re-education of the affected muscles, both to improve the patient’s speech and to strengthen his or her self-esteem. In addition, the coordination of the orofacial musculature involves the adoption of new breathing, articulation and swallowing habits, as these can also cause imbalances in the bone structure and musculature of the mouth.
