Semen bank

What is a sperm bank?

A sperm bank, or cryobank, is located in a fertility clinic. It is a licensed facility where sperm is donated, frozen and stored so that it can be used to help women become pregnant through the process of artificial insemination or intrauterine insemination (IUI). There are many fertility clinics that are licensed by the Human Fertility and Embryology Association (HFEA), both NHS and private. The waiting list for sperm donors varies depending on each clinic.

What is the sperm donation process at a sperm bank like?

The donor must undergo screening tests, medical history review and counseling before being accepted as a registered donor. In addition, he must provide a semen sample at the center, his reaction to freezing will be examined and also the overall sperm count generated each time. If the sample meets the criteria, the potential donor is invited to another session, where he will be asked to provide another urine and semen sample. All donors have a thorough evaluation, which includes testing for infectious diseases such as HIV 1 and 2, hepatitis B and C, and sexually transmitted diseases. The process can take weeks to complete, but once completed and accepted, you can donate sperm.

How many times does a person need to donate sperm?

The donor is expected to donate several times over a period of several months and perhaps even up to a year. This allows the clinic or facility to develop a good supply of donor sperm. Not all fertility treatments are successful the first time, which means that sufficient samples must be collected in case the recipient needs to use it more than once. Qualified sperm donors are expected to donate at least once a week, but are encouraged to visit the clinic two to three times.
