What is infant cognitive development?

Cognitive neurological development concerns everything that the infant, aged between two and six months, experiences in terms of interaction with the environment, cephalic balance, manipulation of objects, regulation of sleep phases, vocalizations, emotional manifestations, etc.

Psychological development is a gradual and progressive stage characterized by a series of behavioral, emotional and social changes and, in short, transformations related to the emergence of new needs.

What are the symptoms of childhood cognitive development problems?

The symptoms depend on the age of the child:

  • 13-18 months: does not smile or laugh when seeing someone or does not babble frequently.
  • 19-24 months: does not integrate or play with other children or is not able to recognize pictures or drawings of family members or objects.
  • 25-30 months: does not pay attention to pictures or is unable to name them.
  • 30-36: does not respond to questions about recent experiences or does not express how he/she feels physically.

What are the causes of child cognitive development problems?

The main causes are related to aggressive treatments:

  • Radiation therapy to the head, spinal cord or neck.
  • Radiation therapy to the whole body
  • Chemotherapy applied to the brain or spinal cord

In many cases, however, the cause is unknown, although it usually has some genetic factor.

What is the treatment of childhood cognitive development problems?

There are several types of therapy to solve the problems of child cognitive development:

  • Behavioral therapy: is a type of psychotherapy that consists of psychological techniques to improve mental and communication skills.
  • Cognitive therapy: basically focuses on the thoughts and emotions that are the origin of these behaviors.
  • Pharmacological treatment: some medications help to treat these problems.
  • Speech therapy: focuses on improving language and oral skills, making your words clearer and building your language skills to learn new words and improve your ability to understand.
