Wrinkles

What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles are one of the first signs of aging. They appear on the surface of the skin and are characterized by a sagging caused by the loss of skin elasticity and tone due to aging or other genetic or environmental factors. The elimination of the signs of aging is an issue that affects a growing number of people and that is why more and more treatment methods are offered by aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery.

Causes of wrinkles or why they occur

Wrinkles are caused by a combination of controllable and uncontrollable factors:

  • Aging: due to the passage of time, the skin loses elasticity and becomes more fragile. The loss of the ability to produce some substances with moisturizing function makes the skin dry and wrinkled, while the decrease in subcutaneous fat accentuates skin laxity, highlighting more wrinkles.
  • UV exposure: UV rays from the sun or tanning lamps accelerate the skin’s aging process by damaging connective tissue. A reduced effectiveness of the latter leads to difficulties in supporting the skin and, consequently, to the early formation of wrinkles.
  • Facial gesticulation: the constant movement of the superficial facial muscles causes a slow deterioration of the skin in these specific areas.
  • Tobacco and alcohol: influence the blood flow to the skin cells, thus promoting early wrinkle formation and skin aging.

What is the treatment?

Today there are many treatments in the field of medicine and cosmetic surgery that can counteract the appearance of wrinkles. The most commonly used are:

  1. Botox
  2. Hyaluronic acid
  3. Blepharoplasty
  4. Facelift
  5. Cosmetic laser peeling
