Against glaucoma, nurture prevention

The IMO Foundation has launched a campaign on the occasion of World Glaucoma Week, which runs from March 9 to 15, under the slogan: Fight glaucoma, nourish prevention. The Instituto de Microcirugía Ocular (IMO), which is part of the Top Doctors centers of excellence, seeks with this campaign to inform the population and promote prevention for a disease that affects one million people in Spain and represents the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world.

During the campaign, free ophthalmological examinations will be performed to the population at risk. These examinations will be performed at the IMO’s Early Diagnosis Unit, and were already carried out last year, when they detected suspected glaucoma or risk factors in 20% of the 200 people they attended. The Association of Pharmacies of Barcelona and the Official College of Optometrists of Catalonia will collaborate with IMO in the campaign, and more than 400 pharmacies in the Catalan capital will distribute informative material on glaucoma.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and prevention. This was explained by Dr. Elena Arrondo, from IMO and member of Top Doctors: “the important thing is to detect glaucoma in time to stop or slow down its evolution, since, at present, there is still nothing we can do to help patients recover their lost vision”.
