How to prevent varicose veins

Varicose veins are a concern for women, and also for men, not only because of the aesthetic issue but also because of the complications they can have. Once they appear, we should go to a specialist, without waiting for them to cause discomfort, but can we prevent them? Dr. Lisbona, a member of Top Doctors, is one of the leading experts in varicose veins and explains some useful recommendations.

“To prevent varicose veins we must first look at the causes and among the most frequent causes there are in the case of women: hereditary factors, hormonal, pregnancy, overweight, lack of exercise …” so there are some predictable factors and others that are not. For example, “you cannot alter the genetic loads when there is an important hereditary factor and neither can you prevent varicose veins from developing when there is a pregnancy,” explains Dr. Lisbona.

However, there are a series of simple recommendations that everyone can follow. “The generic way of prevention for everyone would be: walking, resting with the legs up, avoiding tight clothing, avoiding very high heels (flat shoes are not necessary but neither is a very high heel), exercising, avoiding being overweight, diet…”, measures that Dr. Lisbona recommends, especially for those people who already know that they have a family history of varicose veins.

As with all pathologies, prevention is important, but it is even more important to see a specialist as soon as varicose veins or unsightly veins are detected. “Varicose veins, if left alone, will always increase, and those that are relatively large today but do not cause discomfort will be larger tomorrow and the complications will be serious”. For this reason, Dr. Lisbona warns forcefully: “with or without discomfort, if there are veins in the legs, you should see a specialist, especially if there is a family history”.
