“Easy” and minimally invasive laser technique for sacrococcygeal cyst or pilonidal sinus

Treatments applied to pilonidal disease should not be more disabling to the patient than the disease itself. The potential advantages of non-excisional therapies are faster recovery and less post-procedure pain.

What is the S-FACIL technique?

S-FACIL is applied under spinal or local anesthesia after a small skin incision of 0.5 cm in each pit with the aid of an awl and careful cleaning of the sinus tracts with a curette and peroxide. Subsequently, a radial fiber connected to a diode laser with a wavelength of 1470 nm is introduced into the tracts. The laser energy is used at 12 W with pulses of 8 seconds and pauses between pulses of 1 second.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis with subsequent home cures.
The objective of this technique is the contraction of the irradiated tissue with laser technology in order to eliminate the cavity and avoid a large excisional scar as in the classic techniques.

Advantages of the S-FACIL technique

The advantages of new techniques based on state-of-the-art technology such as S-FACIL are faster recovery and greater comfort.
The available scientific evidence describes that this technique is associated with faster healing, better aesthetic results and therefore a better postoperative quality of life. The recurrence rate is close to 9%, according to the studies published to date.1
