Hip Fractures: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Causes

Hip fractures occur when a patient suffering from osteoporosis (brittle bone) suffers a fall. This is more common in older women. The most common fractures in patients with osteoporosis are wrist fractures, vertebral fractures, and, above all, hip fractures.

Symptoms

In these cases the patient presents intense pain, inability to move and inability to walk.

Treatment

In hip fractures it has been shown that surgical treatment is the only effective way to recover the functional level and quality of patients prior to the fracture.

There are two types of fractures:

1. Fractures of the highest part of the femur (pertrochanteric): these are treated by means of bone fixation, usually with a nail and screws.

2. Fractures of the fermoral neck: the only surgical solution is the placement of a hip prosthesis. This surgery makes it possible to put the foot on the ground immediately and to start the rehabilitation process at an early stage.

Thanks to this technique, patients are able to return to normal life as before the fall.
