Can coaching help me improve my self-esteem?

What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem is one’s perception of oneself, one’s beliefs about one’s ability, how one evaluates oneself and how one feels, taking into account one’s past experiences.

When is someone considered to have low self-esteem?

When a person has low self-esteem, feels insecurity, fear to face challenges, is not able to communicate for fear of rejection, feels that he/she is inferior to the rest of the people with whom he/she is compared, does not see him/herself capable of opting for a better job because he/she feels that he/she is not qualified for it, they have a lack of motivation, nothing leads them to improve or change, they feel that any effort leads them nowhere, that is, they have a negative evaluation of themselves that leads them to have no expectations of improving or changing their current situation, because in the past they have not succeeded or have not been able to try. These people tend to be negative, avoid challenges, feel sadness and guilt for not being able to cope with situations, feel depressed and do not feel happy with their life.

And when is someone considered to have high self-esteem?

On the other hand, a person with high self-esteem has a lot of self-confidence, feels at ease with himself and is happy with his life, knows how to face life’s problems giving them the best solution and always proposing new challenges, does not mind being flexible and modifying things in his life to achieve his goals. We could summarize their lifestyle by saying that they know what they do well, what their talents are and how they can improve, they are assertive, that is, they know how to communicate and express their opinions, they are participative people and like to belong to groups in which they can develop and of course they know how to ask for help when they need it without feeling inferior, they get involved and collaborate in projects where they can offer their knowledge, they know how to be part of a group. They accept criticism, recognize their mistakes, as well as defend their opinions without fear of exposing their points of view. They also tend to be creative and decisive in finding solutions to problems and assume that all their actions have an impact, so they tend to be organized and plan all their projects.

What is coaching?

Coaching is a technique that is used to bring out the maximum potential of a person, whether in the personal, work, sports or academic field, so that they can achieve the goals they set for themselves. If we take into account that, to achieve this purpose, it is necessary to know ourselves, to know what our strengths are, what talents or skills we have and how we can improve them to be successful, there is no doubt the fundamental role that coaching has in the development and strengthening of self-esteem.

To achieve this, it is essential a good communication between client and coach, as it is a teamwork in which the client sets the goals to be achieved and the coach directs him/her.

Once the objective is known, it is necessary to carry out a deep work of self-knowledge, through conversations between coach and client in which the skills, strengths, limitations, thoughts or erroneous beliefs that arise are identified. This requires a climate of trust and confidentiality, in a safe environment to get the most out of the process. The coach must have good communication and listening skills to be able to detect the client’s needs, develop planned action programs to achieve the objectives and give the necessary tools to reach the agreed goal, which must always be present and attentive to the difficulties that may arise along the way.

But the coach is not only used individually to achieve a promotion, get a better job, optimize academic grades or achieve better sports performance, together with the above described, we can deduce the importance of a good coach in the corporate or business environment in order to train leaders who are able to lead a team of people. Companies must have within their organization people who know how to manage a team, who know how to motivate and implement projects with the best skills and resources to get the most out of the team they are part of.

A good leader must have good management and communication techniques, which help him to transmit the values and mission of the company. They must know how to set objectives and goals and establish a plan of action to carry them out. At the same time, he/she must be an example for the employees, must be able to assume the mistakes and be able to solve them, must be empathetic, and know the human team with which he/she works to get the best out of them.

With what has been described in these lines, we point out the importance of taking care of the self-esteem and strengthening it, emphasizing the need of the accompaniment or Coach in the areas of life in which we can be at a certain moment stuck and we need to find ourselves and redirect our work, social, academic, business or personal life.
