Treatment for receding gums

Gum recession is the migration of the gum margin exposing the root of the tooth. It can occur as a consequence of periodontal disease (pyorrhea), traumatic and vigorous brushing, tooth malposition, incorrect dental treatment or mechanical trauma (biting objects, piercings…).

Symptoms

Gum recession favors the appearance of hypersensitivity to cold and heat, the appearance of root caries, the progressive loss of the gum and the bone that supports the tooth and, in some cases, can lead to the loss of the tooth. In the case of anterior (front) teeth, it can be an esthetic problem that worries the patient.

Treatment

If the cause is pyorrhea, a treatment whose main objective is to eliminate bacteria and tartar around the teeth and inside the gums, which is performed by hand instruments (curettes) and / or ultrasonic instruments.

If it is due to traumatic and vigorous brushing, the treatment consists of changing the brushing technique by performing a soft and vertical tooth brushing from gum to tooth.

If recession continues to progress in spite of correct brushing, periodontal microsurgical techniques can be used to cover the gum, restoring an esthetic and healthy appearance to the smile.

The treatment is definitive as long as the different causes of gum recession are avoided and with the sine qua non condition of having a good oral hygiene, a correct non-traumatic brushing and regular visits to the professional for dental and gingival check-ups.
