Collagen is used as a filler material in cases where the cream alone or associated with a nutricosmetic is not enough, for example in skin aged by the sun, wrinkles, or flaccidity marks. Collagen could be used to treat, in general, any problem or even as a preventive of aging.
Effects of collagen
The injection of collagen will cause a decrease in the depth of a wrinkle or furrow, improve the texture and thickness of the skin, and promote luminosity.
The duration of the effects of collagen depends on the indication and the way it is used. In general, its effect lasts between four and six months, although ultimately its duration will vary depending on the patient’s baseline condition, habits and lifestyle, and its ability to degrade it through collagenase (the enzyme that degrades it).
Use of collagen in Spain
Currently, there are two types of collagen authorized in the Spanish market: Prisma and Therafil. Prisma, of equine origin, is mainly used in mesotherapy techniques to regenerate wrinkles and improve flaccidity and even prevent sun damage. Therafil, of porcine origin, is the one used in furrow injection to treat dark circles under the eyes and wrinkles on the upper lip.
In this regard, it is necessary to say that since collagen does not capture water like hyaluronic acid, it would be indicated especially in cases of tendency to retain water, as occurs in the area of dark circles and upper lip, as it tends to project the furrow of dark circles and wrinkles without giving volume to the lip area.
